Bar in the Neustadt threatens to relocate if Franz-Josef-Strasse does not become a pedestrian zone.
The Academy Bar is on the right-hand side at the beginning of the avenue-lined Franz-Josef-Straße. The head behind it is bar operator Phil Zezula.
Recently, the regulars were shocked by the latest saying: “Cars gone or we’re gone!” This means Franz-Josef-Strasse. After the Academy, it should be car-free by June 2024, otherwise the bar will move. There were numerous counter-offers to Salzburg and reactions on Instagram (Editor’s note: 224 likes until July 18).
“For 12.5 years I’ve been sitting out here and thinking with the guests: ‘Ma, how nice it would be if Franz-Josef-Strasse were car-free,'” says the bar operator. The numerous cars in the city center annoy him. “The drivers honk their horns all the time, everyone looks grumpy and nobody is really happy.” At the previous construction site and at the “City of Love” in 2019, the road was also closed and it was gone. For Zezula, this is just the beginning, he believes more areas of the city need to become car-free. “The city would be so pleasant and so beautiful and you might do so much and make so many beautiful things. Franz-Josef-Strasse is just a start, as it affects us there now.”
Zezula uses the upcoming local council elections in 2024 for his request. With signatures and activist actions, the “culture war” will continue in the next nine months.
