Verona (Italy): Sandro Tonali scored two goals to celebrate his birthday, taking AC Milan another step towards winning the Italian Serie A title for the first time in 11 years, following regaining the top spot with a 3-1 victory over its host Verona on Sunday.
After Inter Milan temporarily advanced to the top with a 4-2 victory over Empoli, the pressure was on coach Stefano Pioli’s team, but he beat Verona, ninth in the standings, to regain the top by two points before the last two rounds.
“We weren’t among the nominees (for the title),” Bewley told reporters. We are reaping the fruits of labor, which is not yet finished.”
“Before the match, Zlatan (Milan striker Ibrahimovic) said something great if we want them to remember us, we have three matches (that must be won). Now there are two games left.”
Milan dominated the game at the beginning of the match and created several chances, but Verona opened the scoring in the 38th minute when Darko Lazovic sent a crucial pass to his colleague Davide Faraoni to score.
But Milan refused to surrender, and just before the end of the first half, Rafael Liao, who shined following receiving a yellow card, ran into the penalty area and passed the ball back, which Tonali, who turned 22, into a goal from close range.
The two players cooperated in a similar fashion once more following the four-minute break with a counter-attack, as Liao ran past the Verona defense before sending a cross that Tonali turned into a goal in the empty net.
Alessandro Florenzi, who played near the end, sealed the victory when he exchanged the ball and fired a powerful shot from the right side into the goal.
Earlier, Venezia beat Bologna 4-3 following Dennis Joensen scored the exciting victory goal in the 93rd minute, ending the team’s series of ten consecutive defeats, and clinging to the weak hope of escaping from relegation.
Venezia are five points behind Salrnitana, who are 17th, who drew 1-1 with Cagliari.
Atalanta won 3-1 away from Spezia, equal in points with 59 points, with sixth-placed Roma, which has a game in hand.
