The Federal Executive Council of Nigeria (FEC) has given its approval for the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) to enter into an agreement with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) for the construction of the Nigeria- Morocco.
Nigeria’s Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva, revealed the conclusion of the agreement in a statement to the press following the FEC meeting chaired by the Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, at the presidential palace in Nigeria on Wednesday. ‘Abuja, reports the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
Sylva said the project is still at the preliminary engineering design stage, NAN says.
“The Ministry of Petroleum Resources submitted three memoranda to the Council. In the first note, the Council approved the execution by NNPC of the Memorandum of Understanding with ECOWAS for the construction of the Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline”adds the same source.
“This gas pipeline is to transport gas to several West African countries, to Morocco and, through Morocco, to Spain and Europe”says Mr. Sylva.
The pipeline would link Nigerian gas to every West African coastal country (Benin, Togo, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Gambia, Senegal and Mauritania), ending in Tangier, Morocco, and Cadiz, Spain.
The Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline mega-project, whose feasibility study began in May 2017 at a cost of several billion dollars, was launched during the official visit of HM King Mohammed VI in December 2016 in Abuja, and a related agreement was signed on June 10, 2018, during a trip to Rabat by Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari.
