The United Arab Emirates called Tuesday for an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council on the Houthi attacks on Abu Dhabi, prompting a response from the Saudi-led military coalition in Sanaa.
Lana Nusseibeh, the permanent representative of the UAE to the United Nations, said in a message to the Norwegian presidency of the Security Council, “The UAE calls on the Security Council to speak with one voice and join the firm and unequivocal condemnation of these terrorist attacks, which were launched in complete disregard of international law.” And demanded an emergency meeting of the Council, has not yet set a date for this meeting.
She added that these attacks constitute “another step in the Houthis’ efforts to spread terror and chaos in our region and another attempt by the Houthis to use the capabilities they illegally acquired in defiance of the sanctions imposed by the United Nations to threaten peace and security.”
Attack results
The attacks on Abu Dhabi resulted in 3 deaths and 6 injuries. In response, the coalition led by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, in which the UAE is participating, launched air strikes that killed at least 14 people and wounded regarding 10 in Sanaa.
And the American Wall Street Journal said that the initial results of the Emirati investigation into the attack on Abu Dhabi on Monday concluded the same story announced by the Houthi group, which confirmed that it carried out the attack with a variety of advanced weapons.
The newspaper quoted officials familiar with the investigation conducted by the UAE authorities as saying that the Houthi attacks showed a significant progress in their military capabilities.
On Monday, the Houthi group announced that it had carried out a qualitative military operation in the UAE, and confirmed the targeting of vital facilities in Abu Dhabi and Dubai by drones, ballistic and winged missiles.
The UAE said it reserves the right to respond to what it described as terrorist attacks on its soil.
Solidarity and communication
While the United States announced its condemnation of the attack and confirmed that it would cooperate with its international partners and the UAE to “hold the Houthis accountable”, Tel Aviv affirmed – on Tuesday – its support for the UAE “in the face of terrorism.”
The Emirates News Agency said that Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed received a phone call from Israeli President Isaac Herzog, in which he condemned the Houthi attacks. The agency added that Herzog affirmed Israel’s full support for the UAE in everything it is doing to defend its security and sovereignty, as he put it.
Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett had expressed his strong condemnation of the attack on Abu Dhabi, and said that the Houthis carried it out “at the direction of the Iranians.”
Alliance response
On the ground, the Saudi-led coalition announced the bombing of Houthi sites in the Yemeni capital, Sanaa, during the past 24 hours, and the destruction of a communications system for drones and two platforms used to launch ballistic missiles that targeted Abu Dhabi.
On the other hand, pro-Houthi media said that 14 people were killed – including women and children – and 11 others were wounded in coalition raids on the Libyan neighborhood in Sanaa.
Houthi media sources stated that the aerial bombardment on Sanaa resulted in the killing of the Director of the Aviation College, Abdullah Qassem Al-Junaid, and members of his family, following targeting his house.
