Abu Chakra to “Al-Nahar”: The Banque du Liban stopped securing dollars directly to import gasoline

The representative of fuel distributors, Fadi Abu Chakra, told “Al-Nahar” that “the Banque du Liban stopped securing 85 percent of the price of gasoline according to an exchange platform, and the importing companies today have to resort to banks and buy dollars through an exchange platform,” explaining that “purchasing dollars from banks” It is not guaranteed and has an additional commission.

Abu Shakra said, “This matter prompted some companies to ask the stations to pay the price of fuel in cash dollars, which the stations rejected.”

In a statement, Abu Chakra appealed to Prime Minister Najib Mikati and Energy Minister Walid Fayyad to “move quickly to settle the situation between the oil importing companies and the Banque du Liban.”

He said: “We, as fuel distributors, have become in the middle between companies and stations, and there are some companies asking for cash from distributors.”

He continued, “This matter is not calculated within the fuel price table, while the banks take commissions on dollars, some of them receive commissions between 1 and 2 percent, and others freeze 10 percent of the value of the existing amounts.”

He concluded: “We, as fuel distributors, are keen to keep things in good condition, and our first and last concern, as station owners and distributors, is the citizen and the continuity of our work.”
