Absence of fans in India puts ‘extra pressure’ on Pakistan

Shakeel added, ‘When you have your crowd, you get support. We did not find it and it was not in our hands.’

Despite suffering their eighth defeat at the hands of their arch-rivals in the eighth World Cup, Pakistan are still in a good position in the tournament after victories over the Netherlands and Sri Lanka.

Middle-order batsman Shakeel scored 68 runs against Netherlands and scored 31 runs in the match against Sri Lanka. He was dismissed for just six runs against India.

Pakistan’s next big match is against five-time champions Australia in Bengaluru on Friday.

He said: ‘The mistakes we made in the last match, we have to overcome them. That match is over. If we win against Australia, our position will improve.

‘Australia have always been good at the World Cup. They are a very good team. We know ourselves and we have to play good cricket. We have started the tournament well by winning two matches. We want to focus on every match and not make the mistakes we did against India.’

On Wednesday, all Pakistani players except Mohammad Haris trained in Bengaluru.

Haris is still suffering from fever after coming from Ahmedabad which affected other players in the squad.

Star fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi and opener Abdullah Shafiq were the most affected but were in the nets at the Chinnasumi Stadium.
