Next Thursday, the 15th, at 6 pm, Osvaldo Lamborghini’s exhibition “I am your supplier” will be on display at the Galería del Infinito (Av. Pte. Manuel Quintana 325, Buenos Aires Leith) opening. It will be open to the public Monday through Friday from 10am to 6pm until October 10th. Curated by Agustina Perez, this exhibition brings together the writer and artist’s works that refuse to be quarantined.

The works are pages torn from their original post-industrial contexts (a magazine of erotic stories, a typewritten text, a magazine of erotic photos), all intervened through scratching, gnawing, inaudibility, skinning. Osvaldo Lamborghini defined himself as “the author of a single text” and also created a large number of physical works in plastic, which were discovered in Barcelona a few years ago. The written and the visual seem to be separate realms. But for an “author of a single text”, there is no contradiction between different artistic languages. And, although Lamborghini made them all together, he remained an artist of a single, complete work.

For him, there was nothing more important than “a painter becoming a writer”, but starting from his first poem, the practice of visual writing continued to escalate in the last years of his life until it was unswervingly achieved. progress. “Authorship of a single text” means that behind each work there is a series of concepts that run through and intersect. Lamborghini assumes the existence of a non-specific script in the plastic arts. This case is similar to, but opposite to, that of Alberto Greco, his unexpected but undeniable precursor.

Dictators don’t like this

The practice of professional and critical journalism is a fundamental pillar of democracy. That’s why it bothers those who think they have the truth.

Exiled to Barcelona, he secluded himself like a monk, making all his plastic works in what he called his “little workshop.” For three years from 1983 to 1985, he did not take to the streets. There, locked in his apartment, he created the more than forty works that make up this exhibition, dating back to 1984. The poses are comical and understated in their depiction of what porn magazines seek to achieve, which is to ignite desire in their readers and viewers.

All the materials were supplied by his partner Hanna Muck, who bought them in second-hand stores. Hannah also made sure to provide him with children’s supplies such as tempera, fiber, pens, pencils and glue. There was also whiskey, cognac and Black Shadow cigarettes, which they shared. Generally speaking, female attendants may appear in men’s lives, but Osvaldo Lamborghini is a special name. This man published a very unique text and gave the key to the exhibition title.

He was born in Buenos Aires in 1940. In 1967, he began living in a cheap hotel in the center of Buenos Aires, wandering around without a stable job. It was there, in those impersonal rooms, among the “troubles of hotel life” (a phrase of Martin Fierro’s author that Lamborghini keeps repeating) that writing was born and he wrote his first book “El fiord”, published on the Ghost Press in 1969. During his lifetime, he published only three short books, which circulated clandestinely in photocopies or handwritten copies, establishing him early on as a marginal but cult writer.

In 1977, he published his most representative poem “Die Verneinung”. The second part is titled “Hogarth’s Mother,” a reference to the English painter William Hogarth. This is one of the few direct quotes in her work, and Sister Hogarth’s own song is so special that I’ll just quote the first verse: “The clearer the lake is to you/even if you believe/full of abundance/ Perhaps remember that I/I am your drug supplier. Regarding the last line, the author affirms that the poem “I am your drug supplier” is “not a comfort, but a prophecy of universal hope.”

Instead, the drug appears to be nonspecific: it’s anything that drags on. The drug is paper, handwriting, montage, fragmentary work, it is the bodily fluids themselves as material, it is the compulsion, the inability to stop, the total dependence, the monastic devotion to the physical work involved that puts the whole body into the creation of art. In fact, there is a prophecy that means the work is never done, it always comes. Lamborghini really puts its body to work. This is his way of life.

Since 1983, in those three years, Lamborghini circulated throughout the department, producing from the bed, in the “little workshop”, its operating laboratory, but a laboratory from the days of the Lascaux caves, An anachronistic provisional, ancient type of worker, as Paul Valéry read about in Degas’s laboratory. It was in that bunker that he reached his deepest concentration, and within two years he produced more than five hundred works. Lamborghini died in a working position on his bed in his “small workshop” in November 1985.

In 2015, his plastic works were exhibited for the first time at Macba in Barcelona, under the title Teatro Proletario de Cámara, curated by Valentí Roma. In 2018, some of the artist’s works were included in the Oscar Masotta exhibition. Theory is action, in the same museum. In 2023, Argentina’s first large-scale solo exhibition will be held at CCK, called “Osvaldo Lamborghini”. Material Scribe, curated by Paula Cortes Rocca and Agustina Pérez.
