About Michel Aoun, who is not finished!

It is correct to describe the scene of President Michel Aoun’s exit from the Republican Palace as historic. He entered six years ago with the embrace of my people and “a buzzword” and came out following the upheaval, “revolution”, collapses and crises of a popular boom that none of the heads of the independence state had preceded.

Michel Aoun did not retire. The picture seemed as if the presidency was with him as a station, following which he continued to quarrel with him. In the coming months and years, Aoun will not be behind the scenes in political life, but will remain present, polemical, some applauding him, and others attacking him.
It did not end with the end of the covenant. He “abandoned Baabda Palace and returned to live in people’s hearts,” says the song, which was released by the Free Patriotic Movement a few days ago, and it has become a trend among them in their statements and comments on social media. This is how his lovers see him, the “leader” who went out from the people, and to the people he returns.

The president has returned to the “general”, with what the word means for the “current” of revolution and battles, of stubbornness and contentiousness. It is thus as if he chose to die on the stage of political life, not its margin. And here he is spending his last day of his term in his house in Rabieh, relying on the embrace of the people and a parliamentary bloc that will remain with him influential in the Lebanese scene, in which he has been a major player for more than forty years.

The “nightmare” that he represents for many, is not over. The tours of political rams with Aoun’s movement will continue in a homeland that is walking over a field of political, financial, economic and social mines.
It is certain that Aoun cannot be blamed for the consequences of previous covenants, but it is also certain that he inherited their heavy legacy. The crisis bogged down for years, and it generated crises during his reign. Some say that Aoun succeeded strategically and failed on small matters. He thought that resolving the major issues would suffice him. It seemed that the internal contradictions and their political and sectarian legacies necessitated attention to small issues, as much as turning to major issues.
Some say that Aoun exposed all the flaws of the Lebanese system by his performance, restoring the position of the first presidency, its symbolism and its role, and that the description of political life is divided between before and following Aoun’s presidency.

In any case, Michel Aoun is not finished. And its impact on political life will last more than one term… and its impact will last more than a few years.
