The cancellations, evenly split between departures and arrivals, mostly concerned Air Canada flights, which had around 20 canceled flights.
Planes from Flair, United Airlines and WestJet were also affected by the cancellations.
In addition, several flights had slight delays, in particular due to weather conditions.
As elsewhere in the world where several thousand flights have been canceled since Christmas, Canadian carriers are increasingly caught up by the consequences of the spread of the Omicron variant, which is disrupting schedules.
In particular, the Alberta carrier WestJet announced on December 30 that it would have to cancel regarding 15% of its flights scheduled for January, due to too many employees infected or having been in contact with sick people.
“We mightn’t anticipate the rapid and unpredictable impact of the Omicron variant on our people and operations, in addition to freezing temperatures in Western Canada and a lack of manpower. Despite our contingency plan […] we are no longer able to forecast the resources for our schedule, ”said WestJet Interim President and CEO Harry Taylor.
