Aboul Gheit and Lavrov discuss developments in the war on Lebanon and Gaza and ways to stop it

The Secretary-General of the Arab League and the Russian Foreign Minister met on Wednesday, on the sidelines of the high-level segment of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

The two parties discussed international and regional issues of common interest, most notably developments in the Israeli war on the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, as well as the dangerous escalation in Lebanon.

Aboul Gheit stressed that sliding towards a comprehensive regional confrontation would not be in the interest of any party, and that the Israeli push for escalation is pushing matters to an edge that the international community must realize the extent of its danger and work quickly and decisively to undo it.

According to the official spokesman for the Secretary-General of the Arab League, Counselor Jamal Rushdi, Aboul Gheit was keen to inform the Russian Foreign Minister of the results of the efforts undertaken by the Arab-Islamic ministerial group concerned with the war on Gaza in order to reach an immediate and permanent ceasefire and implement the two-state solution.

The Secretary-General of the Arab League pointed out the importance of Russia’s participation in the efforts aimed at turning the vision of the two states into a reality and not just a slogan.

The official spokesman for the Secretary-General of the Arab League added that Aboul Gheit listened to the Russian minister’s vision on the developments in the Ukrainian crisis, expressing his aspiration to reach a political settlement to this dangerous conflict.

Aboul Gheit discussed with Lavrov ways to strengthen Arab-Russian relations, within the framework of existing cooperation between the two sides, which is supposed to culminate in the holding of the Arab-Russian summit immediately after the end of preparations for it.
