Abortion has not been regulated uniformly in the USA for a year. Each state has its own laws. The elections could change the political patchwork.

Fourteen states in the US have banned abortion in almost all cases, including Idaho, Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas. Georgia bans abortion after week six, Arizona and Florida after week 15, Utah after week 18, and North Carolina after week 20.

According to a list by the New York Times, nine other states are dealing with possible restrictions. In the rest of the country, abortion is still legal, for example in the populous states of California and New York.

The population is largely divided on the question of abortion, but the majority are against a ban. According to a poll this spring, about 60 percent of Americans believe abortion should be legal in all or most cases.

On June 24, 2022, the U.S. Supreme Court reversed the landmark “Roe v. Wade» up. Accordingly, women nationwide had the right to terminate a pregnancy. Three judges appointed by former US President Donald Trump were decisive in overturning this verdict.

“We are thrilled and overjoyed,” commented a representative of the “League for the Right to Life” at the time. Roman Catholic bishops said they thanked God. On the other hand, a representative of a family planning association was outraged that the verdict robs women of the right to determine their bodies “and gives politicians this right”. (epd/jow)
