Bogotá: Colombian President Ivan Duque openly stated that abortion is not a right and reminded that the task of a progressive society is to ensure the protection of life. He spoke openly once morest abortion while addressing a conference held in Bogota, the Colombian capital, in connection with Religious Freedom Day.
His words are relevant when the Constitutional Court recently legalized abortions up to the 24th week of pregnancy: ‘We respect legality and justice. But this should not mean that we stop defending that life begins at conception.’
Abortion is not a method of contraception, but rather an invasion of life. Because there is no right to have an abortion. There is no act more heinous than taking a life that might hope to enter society. A truly progressive society ensures the protection of life. A progressive society will never despise life, he added.
This past February, Colombia’s Constitutional Court decriminalized abortion up to 24 weeks. Efforts to reverse the said verdict have been initiated since then. The latest move in this regard is that the professors of the country’s leading ‘De La Sabana’ University have filed a petition in the court.
In addition, pro-life representatives, including representatives, are exploring the possibility of a referendum on a constitutional amendment banning abortion. It is in this context that the president’s outspoken opposition to abortion becomes all the more remarkable. Ivan Duke’s presidential term ends on August 7. Leftist leader Gustavo Petro is the next president.
