An attempt to smuggle a huge shipment of drugs intended for international smuggling via sea routes was thwarted.

According to a security source, a joint security operation between the regional security services in the city of Safi and the National Brigade of the Judicial Police, on Saturday evening, September 21, resulted in the thwarting of an international drug smuggling operation of a shipment weighing eight tons and 112 kilograms of hashish through the seaport of the city of Safi.

This security operation enabled the seizure of this drug shipment, consisting of 199 packages prepared for international smuggling via sea routes, packed on board a freight truck registered in Morocco, which was seized immediately after its entry into the Atlantic port of Safi.

The investigation procedures carried out in the context of this case also led to the arrest of 21 people aged between 24 and 48 years, on suspicion of their involvement in the activity of the criminal network involved in the international smuggling of this shipment of drugs, in addition to the seizure of barrels containing 1,160 litres of petrol and a second small truck on the spot.

The investigations carried out in this case took several weeks, as information was exploited indicating that a criminal network was planning to carry out a qualitative international drug smuggling operation, which necessitated tracking and tracing the seized drug shipments, before they were seized and those involved in loading and smuggling them were arrested.

The detainees were subjected to judicial investigations conducted by the National Brigade of the Judicial Police under the supervision of the competent Public Prosecution Office, in order to determine all local and international ramifications of this criminal activity, as well as to arrest all those involved and complicit with the members of this criminal network.

This security operation is part of the intensive efforts made by the General Directorate of National Security to combat international drug smuggling.
