AHV child pension: “If you want to have children when you’re older, you should bear the costs yourself.”

The Social Security and Health Commission wants to abolish the child pension to eliminate discrimination. This is mainly supported by the right.

The National Council Commission for Social Security and Health (SGK) submitted a motion on Friday with 16 votes to nine to fundamentally abolish old-age children’s pensions in the AHV and occupational pension schemes.

The change should only apply to new pensions. This means that survivors’ pensions and children’s pensions in the event of disability and their further payment at retirement age would not be affected.

“The Commission’s decision is worthy of support”

The Commission wants to eliminate discrimination with the change. Center National Councilor Thomas Rechsteiner is also convinced of this: “The commission’s decision is worthy of support. Because it is also discrimination between men and women. For biological reasons, a woman cannot have children for as long as a man.” A study is also said to have confirmed that a third of women who become mothers over the age of 40 have a higher level of education. “Higher educational qualifications open up higher income and wealth prospects and therefore these people do not need an old-age child pension,” concludes Rechsteiner.

“They are mainly well-off men”

Solothurn SVP National Councilor Rémy Wyssmann also agrees. “It is mainly well-off men who benefit from such additional benefits. “Academics and politicians, for example, who think they have to have children when they are older should do so at their own financial risk,” said the Solothurn resident. He goes on to say that the AHV child pension is three times higher than it was 20 years ago. “And a lot of it is exported abroad,” says Wyssmann. In addition, the insurance law lawyer emphasizes: “If you are really affected by old-age poverty, the loss of your child’s pension will increase your tax-free supplementary benefits.”

“Children’s future at risk”

Green National Councilor Manuela Weichelt clearly rejected this motion. “It’s not just men who are affected, but increasingly women too. If a woman has a child at the age of 43, it is quite possible that she will retire while her child is still studying,” says Weichelt. And without the child’s pension, studies, for example, cannot be financed. “There are also many young adults who claim the child’s pension directly – that would then no longer apply. “So you punish the children directly,” she continues. This would endanger the future of these children.

“We’re saving money in the wrong place”

Commission President Barbara Gysi (SP) also says: “Savings are being made in the wrong places.” Many of these children are already at risk of poverty and are therefore limited in their educational opportunities. “With the abolition of the child pension, the children of retired parents will be directly affected and disadvantaged,” says Gysin. You shouldn’t save money, especially when it comes to children’s education.
