Abdullah bin Zayed: Climate change is the main challenge of this stage

This came during the seventh meeting of the Supreme National Committee, in the presence of His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chairman of the National Information Office, who witnessed a discussion of the ongoing preparations for the conference, which will be hosted by the country from November 30 to December 12 at Expo City Dubai.

During the meeting, His Highness referred to climate change as the “primary challenge” of this stage, and His Highness said: “By virtue of the harsh climatic nature of the UAE, and the transition process in the energy sector taking place in it, we understand the urgent need to take ambitious measures to mitigate the consequences of climate change. And work to reach the path of maintaining the goal of not exceeding the rise in the planet’s temperature at the level of 1.5 degrees Celsius.

We also recognize the need to support the growing number of communities hit by droughts, heat, floods, storms, and other disasters and shocks caused by climate change. We also believe that investing in a low-emissions future can lead to sustainable economic growth and create the jobs needed to achieve a just transition. My work is in the energy sector.

His Highness added, “Our goal is for the COP28 conference to succeed in achieving progress and a radical transformation that reduces the repercussions of climate change. The UAE’s agenda for the conference is characterized by ambition, focus on practicality and accountability, and the transition from pledges to implementation of concrete actions. We will also work with all stakeholders keen to play a constructive role, to contribute to finding solutions through the issues of mitigation, adaptation, loss and damage, and climate finance ». .

His Highness stressed the need to ensure the application of a comprehensive approach in all logistical preparations, including providing a seamless experience for all delegates and visitors, and taking advantage of the UAE’s position as a hub linking more than 140 cities from all over the world. He also highlighted the importance of strengthening institutional mechanisms for the meaningful participation of youth in the United Nations climate process.

He also highlighted the diversity of the COP28 Bureau team, saying: “The COP28 team represents more than 30 nationalities and comes from diverse age groups, ethnicities and professional backgrounds, including IGOs, NGOs, previous COP Presidencies, government and private sectors. . This combination of skills and experience will help ensure a comprehensive and effective conference.”

For his part, His Excellency Dr. Sultan bin Ahmed Al Jaber, appointed President of the Conference of the Parties (COP28), Vice-Chairman of the Supreme National Committee to supervise preparations for the Conference of the Parties (COP28), confirmed that the conference will be inclusive and accessible to all.

Referring to the importance of solidarity, cooperation and concerted efforts, stressing that he will undertake an external tour to listen to the priorities of the various stakeholders, with the aim of enhancing consultation and activating a large group of concerned parties.
