Abbey of Saint-Maurice (VS) and the Impact of Alleged Abuse: Brewery Sales Decline and Strategies for Recovery

2023-12-18 21:41:55

The revelations of alleged sexual abuse committed within the Abbey of Saint-Maurice (VS) weigh not only on its reputation but also on its business. According to 24heures.ch, two important partners of the religious community brewery, including a drinks distributor from the Riviera, have ended this collaboration. The director of the Abbey brewery admits that sales have fallen by almost half this year. While they were between 100,000 and 150,000 bottles annually, in 2023 they should only reach 60,000 to 70,000 bottles.

According to the official, the abuse cases obviously had a negative influence. But this decline can also be explained by other factors, notably the fact that the brewery wanted to give itself time to review its strategy. It must be said that the hopes born from the launch of these beers in 2019 were quickly dashed: the Covid pandemic the following year, and the long closures of restaurants that resulted from it, thwarted the commercial takeoff of these products. , as explained RhôneFM in 2020.
