Turkey – Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’ announcement from Turkey yesterday, Thursday, of his intention to head to the Gaza Strip received wide coverage from Arab media, both official and private.
In his speech from the podium of the Turkish parliament earlier on Thursday, in the presence of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, his government ministers, and all Turkish parties, Abbas announced his intention to head with all members of the Palestinian leadership to the Gaza Strip, in a move he hopes will contribute to stopping the Israeli war that has been ongoing since October 7.
Abbas called on the UN Security Council to secure his and the members of the Palestinian leadership’s arrival to Gaza, calling on the leaders of Arab, Islamic and friendly countries and the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to participate in the visit.
Within the framework of the Arab media interest in Abbas’ speech, the official Saudi Press Agency published a news item entitled “The President of the State of Palestine calls for an immediate halt to the Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip.”
The agency focused on the Palestinian president’s announcement of his intention to go to Gaza, and his call on the Security Council to secure the visit.
Under the title “The Palestinian President announces his intention to head with the entire Palestinian leadership to Gaza,” the official Qatari News Agency followed Mahmoud Abbas’ speech in the Turkish Parliament, noting that the speech was attended by President Erdogan.
In turn, the official Omani News Agency devoted a portion of its coverage to the Palestinian president’s speech.
Under the title “Abbas: Israel is waging a war of extermination against the Palestinian people,” the agency covered President Abbas’s denunciation of the international silence on the Israeli crimes committed against the Palestinian people since Tel Aviv began its war on Gaza more than 10 months ago.
In the same vein, the official Egyptian news agency highlighted Abbas’s statements to the Turkish parliament, in a news item it published under the title “Palestinian President: We are being subjected to historical injustice, war crimes and genocide.”
The agency highlighted in its news the praise of President Abbas, during his speech, for the roles of Turkey, Egypt and Jordan in supporting the Palestinian cause and his intention to head to Gaza.
** Interest from private media
The wide media interaction with Abbas’s speech was not limited to the official Arab media, but also extended to the private media.
Saudi media focused on Abbas’ announcement of his intention to go to Gaza.
The Saudi Al Arabiya channel published on its website a coverage under the title “Abbas before the Turkish Parliament: I will go to Gaza.”
In the same way, the Saudi newspaper “Asharq Al-Awsat” devoted a space in its coverage to Abbas’s speech, with a story published under the title “Abbas before the Turkish Parliament: I have decided to go to Gaza with the Palestinian leadership.”
In Egypt, Al-Qahirah News Channel highlighted Abbas’ speech to the Turkish Parliament in extensive coverage that included many headlines, including “The Palestinian President calls on the Security Council to secure his arrival to Gaza,” and “Abbas: We are surprised by the silence of the international community in the face of the occupation’s daily massacres in the shelters in the Gaza Strip.”
Also, Qatari media outlets, including Al Jazeera and Al Arabiya TV, paid attention to Abbas’ speech in the Turkish parliament, with headlines including: “Palestinian President: I call on the Security Council to secure our access to the Gaza Strip,” and “Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas: I have decided to head with all members of the Palestinian leadership to the Gaza Strip.”
In Algeria, Al Bilad newspaper covered President Abbas’s statements, in a coverage titled “Mahmoud Abbas announces his intention to head with the entire Palestinian leadership to the Gaza Strip.”
Abbas’s speech in the Turkish parliament comes as Israel, with American support, has been waging a devastating war on Gaza since October 7, 2023, leaving more than 132,000 Palestinians dead and wounded, most of them children and women, and more than 10,000 missing, amid massive destruction and a deadly famine.
In contempt of the international community, Israel continues the war, ignoring the UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate halt, and the International Court of Justice’s orders to take measures to prevent acts of genocide and to improve the catastrophic humanitarian situation in Gaza.
