Abbas calls for recognition of Palestine and support for ending the Israeli occupation

New York – Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, yesterday, Wednesday, called for international support to end the Israeli occupation, recognize the Palestinian state, and support its obtaining full membership in the United Nations.

This came in a series of meetings held by Abbas with leaders of countries and officials, on the sidelines of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, including his counterparts from Bulgaria, Rumen Radev, from Brazil, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, and the prime ministers of Greece, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, and the prime ministers of the Netherlands, Dick Schoof, according to the official news agency. Palestinian “Wafa”.

During those meetings, Abbas discussed “ceasefire efforts in the Gaza Strip, the entry of humanitarian aid, sheltering the displaced, the withdrawal of the (Israeli) occupation forces from Gaza, and stopping the escalation in the occupied West Bank, including Jerusalem.”

Abbas called for “recognition of the State of Palestine, like other countries (that have recognized it), with the aim of contributing to supporting efforts aimed at achieving security and peace in the region.”

Last May, Spain, Norway, and Ireland officially announced their recognition of the State of Palestine, followed by Slovenia and Armenia in the following June, bringing the number of countries that recognize Palestine to 149 out of 193 countries in the United Nations General Assembly.

Abbas stressed in his meetings “the necessity of supporting Palestine’s efforts to obtain full membership in the United Nations, in preparation for starting a political path based on international legitimacy resolutions and the Arab Peace Initiative.”

He stressed “the necessity of an international effort to oblige Israel to respect the resolutions of international legitimacy and international courts, the latest of which is the United Nations General Assembly resolution calling for an end to the Israeli occupation, appreciating Greece’s vote in favor of the resolution presented by the State of Palestine.”

On September 18, the United Nations General Assembly approved the first resolution submitted by Palestine, demanding Israel’s withdrawal from the occupied territories within 12 months.

Earlier Wednesday, the Palestinian President met his French counterpart, Emmanuel Macron, and called on him to “translate the strong friendship that unites the two countries, by recognizing the State of Palestine, and supporting its acquisition of full membership in the United Nations, in preparation for the start of a political path based on international legitimacy resolutions that ends the Israeli occupation, and embodies… The establishment of a Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.”
