The Abass Ndao hospital center is celebrating its 90th anniversary this year. Events to celebrate this existence will begin this Tuesday, November 14, coinciding with World Diabetes Day. For the occasion, a diabetes screening will be organized at the treatment center for this pathology, Mark Sankalé, housed within this health structure, followed by several meetings for the good of this establishment.

90 years is worth celebrating. The Abass Ndao hospital has matured, even if it has not yet reached cruising speed. Although it was built in 1935 to serve as a rest home for elderly prisoners, things quickly evolved in this establishment which became, around the 1950s, a shelter for care. This is how a dispensary and a maternity ward will be set up on the site known as the «Repos Mandel», in tribute to the elderly people interned in this place.

Abass Ndao hospital has evolved a lot. But demand still remains high and references come from everywhere. A situation which led the State to review the position of the hospital on the health map. From a center it moved, in 1974, to a municipal hospital with services such as gynecology and surgery. Currently, Abass Ndao is a level 3 hospital with communal characteristics, with the presence of all medical services.

Housed in the district commune of Gueule Tapée-Fass-Colobane, the Abass Ndao hospital houses the reference center for diabetes, a chronic disease which is growing in society. It was in 1966 that the Rotary Club of Dakar covered the financial costs of the construction of the said center. However, the inauguration of the Mark Sankalé anti-diabetes center will take place in 1993. The hospital is also known for its ophthalmology care center.

A screening will also be carried out this Tuesday in the premises, in order to establish a culture of prevention.

Other themes will also be debated during these days (from November 14 to 16, 2023) including internal medicine, gynecology, pediatrics but also general surgery, the operating room, among others. A symposium on the developments will also be on the agenda.
