Sony is implementing an innovative initiative to extend the lifespan of its old Aibo ERS-1000 robot dogs. The aim is to repair used Aibo units and repurpose them for medical and care facilities. The goal is to help reduce waste and help patients.
The “foster parent program for Aibo”
The Aibo ERS-1000 was released five years ago now. To prevent these old robot dogs from being thrown away, Sony Japan offers an ingenious solution. This is the “Aibo Foster Parent Program”. This initiative aims to support ERS-1000 owners who choose to do donation of their robot to a noble cause.
Repair and repurposing of ERS-1000 units
According to a Japanese press release, Sony will take charge of testing and repairing old robot dogs donated to the program. Subsequently, these units will be supplied to medical establishments, retirement homes. Also, other organizations will be able to benefit from it as emotional support for their patients.
Rates and contributions
Sony plans to charge an undisclosed rate to the “foster parents” of these old robot dogs for this service. Additionally, some contributions might be allocated to the maintenance and repair of other Aibo units. Either way, it would depend on their condition.
Aibo’s Abilities as Emotional Support
Basically, those old Sony robot dogs weren’t initially marketed as an emotional support device. However, its abilities make it an obvious choice. Indeed, the ERS-1000 responds to voice commands and touch, thanks to various sensors for caresses. It even includes a camera at nose level to recognize family members.
An emotional alternative for those who can’t have real dogs
For people who can’t have a real dog, these old robot dogs from Sony offer a delightful emulation experience. Furthermore, this approach is part of the Japanese trend in favor of emotional support robots. Especially since we can see examples such as Pepper from SoftBank and the therapeutic seal Paro are present.
Reducing electronic waste while providing emotional support
In short, this initiative aims to remove Sony’s old robot dogs from the market. Furthermore, it will contribute to reduce the risk of electronic waste. It also makes it possible to provide a valuable source of emotional support to healthcare establishments. But above all, they are ideal for people who really need them.
