It was a resident of Rochefort who discovered the abandoned letters while walking on Saturday March 26. They were in seven large Post Office bags, hidden behind a bush, under a bridge.

Alerted, the public company filed a complaint and conducted the investigation internally. The culprit, a young 20-year-old postman, was quickly unmasked and fired.

“It was raining, it was cold and I didn’t know the tour”

The young postman to the police

The young man, on a fixed-term contract, had worked at La Poste since last December. He allegedly got rid of the mail between March 7 and 9. Arrested and then placed in police custody, he admitted to investigators that he had deliberately thrown away the letters to shorten his day… due to the weather conditions, which were clearly bad that day. “It was raining, it was cold and I didn’t know the tour,” he explained to the police.

La Poste sent a letter of apology to the recipients concerned and invited them to file a complaint. Around fifty complaints had been recorded at the beginning of April.
