Abad ousted, return of Schiappa, an emergency health worker: here are the new members of the French government

Olivier Veran

Olivier Véran, until then Minister of Relations with Parliament and previously Minister of Health during the Covid-19 crisis, has been appointed government spokesperson to replace Olivia Grégoire, the Elysée Palace announced in a press release on Monday.

He will be more particularly “in charge of democratic renewal”, it is specified, while the last legislative elections were characterized by record abstention.

Jean-Francois Carenco

The former prefect Jean-François Carenco has been appointed overseas minister to replace Yaël Braun-Pivet, who has since been elected president of the National Assembly.

The new minister, who was notably prefect of Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon (1996-1997) and Guadeloupe (1999-2002), a graduate of Ena, has until now chaired the Energy Regulation Commission . He replaces Ms. Braun-Pivet, MP for Yvelines, elected President of the National Assembly last Tuesday.

Laurence Boone

The chief economist of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Laurence Boone has been appointed Secretary of State in charge of Europe.

Ms. Boone, 53, succeeds Clément Beaune in this position. Former economic adviser to President François Hollande from 2014 to 2016, Ms. Boone has also been Deputy Secretary General of the OECD since January.

Christophe Bechu

Christophe Béchu is appointed Minister of Ecological Transition and Territorial Cohesion, a position previously held by Amélie de Montchalin, outgoing government who had failed to be re-elected in the legislative elections.

Clement Beaune

Clément Beaune is appointed Minister Delegate in charge of Transport, a portfolio which had not been filled in the first government of Elisabeth Borne after the departure of Jean-Baptiste Djebbari.

Mr. Beaune, 41, former adviser to Emmanuel Macron at the Elysée Palace, was until then Minister Delegate in charge of Europe. He had managed to get himself elected deputy in Paris a fortnight ago.

Marlène Schiappa

Marlène Schiappa, loyal to Emmanuel Macron, has been appointed Secretary of State for the Social and Solidarity Economy and Associative Life.
