That’s not all, the story mentioned by Het Laatste Nieuws goes much further, even to the United States… It is also regarding fraudulent barrels from the Jupiler brewery, also managed by AB InBev, put on boats in the port of Antwerp and shipped to the United States. The entire cargo, we are talking regarding some 30,000 barrels, was recalled to Belgium as a precaution.
AB InBev necessarily conducted the investigation. The water from the beer kegs was found to have a different composition than the tap water from the Stella and Jupiler breweries. And it also appeared that the kegs filled with water were damaged at the handle of the beer. The thesis of fraud then took on consistency.
The investigation led to a driver who worked for an AB InBev contracted transport company. The man was regularly ordered to pick up beer and transport it to a distribution center in the Netherlands and to the port of Antwerp. A check of his GPS showed that he and his cargo stopped each time at the warehouse of a liquor merchant in Zaventem and Grimbergen.
According to the prosecution and AB InBev, it is clear that the driver and the liquor dealer were in cahoots and turned the beer into water.
The driver and his sidekick will be tried tomorrow by the Leuven Criminal Court. They not only risk a prison sentence and a fine, but also a claim for damages of more than 1.4 million euros.
