Hundreds of donuts were recently found in a waste container in Aathal ZH. “I think it’s terrible that so much food is just thrown away,” says a news scout. The Dunkin Donuts production facility is located in the affected building. “If you can’t sell these donuts anymore, that’s one thing. But why aren’t they given away or donated?”

According to the 28-year-old, it wasn’t the first time the container had been filled with donuts. This week it was particularly annoying because of the heat: “The smell in front of the building was very penetrating. In addition, a number of wasps were attracted to the sweets.”

Donuts that are not eaten within 24 hours end up in the trash

As Dunkin Donuts writes on request from 20 minutes, the container in the picture is the recycling point for leftovers from all 17 Dunkin Donuts branches in Switzerland. “Donuts are fresh products and must be sold or consumed within 24 hours.” A later use of the donuts is no longer possible for reasons of quality and food safety.

Dunkin Donuts emphasizes that it takes the issue of food waste seriously: “Of course, we try to correctly assess the actual need when planning production and to avoid food waste.” However, a certain residual stock is unavoidable. The remaining goods have been used in the Chrüzlen fermentation plant in Oetwil am See ZH since 2016, where they are converted into electricity and waste heat.
