Aargau: Vegan activist charged with animal cruelty
He had entered a chicken farm to protest once morest the suffering of farm animals. He finds himself in court, accused of having stressed them.
Is it animal abuse if animal welfare activists enter a chicken coop causing stress to poultry? Yes, replied the Aargau public prosecutor’s office, which sentenced a 36-year-old activist by penal order. Not agreeing with the public prosecutor, he found himself in the district court of Laufenburg (AG) on Tuesday.
The 36-year-old was part of a troop that entered a Naturafarm chicken coop in Eptingen (BL) in May 2021. “In the breeding hall, there are several dead, injured and sick animals. The hens have little space and live tight once morest each other”, we noticed at the time. The police had chased the activists away and the situation had not degenerated.
However, according to the Crown, the animals were subjected to unnecessary stress. In addition to home invasion and coercion, the court also accused the defendant of cruelty to animals. These activists do not understand why one of them is judged when, from their point of view, the faults are committed by the operator of the farm. The latter relativize the accusations, “We have 8000 animals. It is normal that sometimes some of them die,” the farmer told “20 Minutes.” The cantonal veterinarian found nothing to complain regarding. We do not yet know the verdict.
