Aardman Studios Facing Modeling Clay Shortage: Impact on Chicken Run and Wallace & Gromit Productions

The factory which had supplied the Chicken Run and Wallace and Gromit studio with modeling clay for several decades closed last March without finding a buyer. Aardman is looking for a solution.

The Aardman studio, known for its stop-motion films Chicken Run and Wallace and Gromit, is currently facing a shortage of the special modeling clay it uses to make its characters.

The British daily The Telegraph revealed last weekend that the company which had been manufacturing Lewis Newplast, a nylon-reinforced clay flexible enough for use in films, since the early 1970s had closed its last factory in the United Kingdom last March.

According to the newspaper, the Aardman studio, which is preparing to release Chicken Run 2, would have enough stock to complete its current project: a new Wallace & Gromit film planned for 2024. But the stock would not be sufficient to begin production of ‘another project.

“No reason to worry”

The Aardman studio quickly reacted to the news which made the rounds on social networks, causing a worldwide stir: their stock should allow them to shoot at least one more film. And several projects are in the pipeline, Aardman executives reassured.

“We are touched by your recent concern regarding the future of our beloved playdough creations, but we would like to reassure fans that there is absolutely no reason for concern,” reads a post. official press release from the studio published on social networks.

“We have high quantities of inventory for our current and future projects. And like Wallace in his workshop, we have been working behind the scenes over the past few months to ensure a smooth transition to new stock of modeling clay to continue making our iconic productions.”

The sequel to Chicken Run in December

Aardman’s new production, a sequel to Chicken Run, will be released on Netflix on December 15. Titled Chicken Run: La menace nuggets, this film still follows Ginger and Rocky, installed in a paradise island with their daughter Molly. But it is attracted by the outside world, which is nevertheless threatening to the chickens.

When Molly finds herself trapped in a fortress-like industrial farm, her parents and their friends will do everything they can to get inside. But it turns out to be impossible to access… “It’s a bit of a James Bond film but with chickens”, its director Sam Fell promised last June at the Annecy festival.
