AADE is looking for 212,000 taxpayers to return 138 million euros to them

The numerous online scams by internet savants and “defenses” on the part of taxpayers have led to extreme caution in many cases, resulting in some not even collecting their tax refund or even the profits from tax fraud.

Emails from the Inland Revenue Authority asking them to provide their bank account IBAN so that a tax refund can be issued go straight to the junk bin, believing it to be an attempt at fraud.

There are even cases where taxpayers won up to 50,000 euros in the monthly tax lottery and immediately deleted the email, thinking that someone astute is trying to access their bank account.

The result of the situation that has developed is the pending tax refunds of 173 million euros (July data), due to the absence of an IBAN. In total, 212,000 TINs, beneficiaries of tax refunds, have not declared an IBAN today.

The outstanding amount to be refunded has decreased in the last two years by approximately 150 million euros and the taxpayers of this category by approximately 2 million, but the problem remains.

The main reason that blocks tax refunds is the non-declaration of IBAN, but not the only one. If the taxpayer has not submitted a series of declarations, the tax refund is blocked, as well as in cases of bankruptcy or death of the beneficiary, where the …adventure of searching for the heirs begins, after the inheritance has been accepted earlier.

To deal with the problem mainly with IBANs, AADE has taken a series of measures. From messages to the taxpayers’ personal accounts to emails and phone calls (a new round of communication is imminent) but also a “block” in the submission of tax returns if the IBAN has not been declared, as happened during the last submission period (with the removal of the obligation at the end of the process for the elderly and disabled).

Last week, it was announced the possibility of declaring a foreign IBAN account, maintained within the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA). Also, in the same application of the myAADE digital portal, an IBAN account maintained in Greece can be declared to a payment service provider that has not activated the modern automatic verification of the beneficiaries of the IBAN account.

Regarding this year’s tax declarations, AADE has returned 93% of the taxes that arose after the issuance of credit statements.
