A24 probably closed until midnight after accident with dangerous goods truck | NDR.de – News

A hazardous goods truck crashed into the guardrail on Thursday on the A24 between Suckow and Neustadt-Glewe. Gas was escaping. Firefighters have since sealed the leak. The A24 will probably be completely closed until midnight.

Carbon dioxide escapes from the dangerous goods truck in the form of gas – that’s minus 72 degrees. This created a difficult situation for the emergency services. On the one hand they had to work with breathing apparatus because of the risk of suffocation, on the other hand there was also a risk of frostbite due to the extreme cold. In the late followingnoon, the fire brigade managed to seal the leak. More than 100 emergency services are at the scene of the accident, and the German Red Cross has set up a supply station.

The A24 is currently completely closed in both directions. The salvage work will probably last until midnight, it was said. The hazardous goods truck involved in the accident had to be recovered and a replacement tank truck had been requested.

The driver had initially strayed off the road to the right with his truck and trailer, then, according to the police’s initial findings, he probably countersteered and drove into the central barrier, where the truck and trailer came to a standstill. The tanker trailer tipped on its side. The driver was not injured. Further information on the course of the accident is not yet known. According to initial estimates, the property damage is estimated at around 250,000 euros.
