A YouTuber who suffers from an identity disorder wants to seek medical assistance in dying

A French YouTuber with a psychiatric disorder has been causing a stir since she announced her intention to provide medical assistance in dying in Belgium.

“My life is not a Netflix series, we can’t debate the end,” said Olympe, in tears, in a video posted on her Instagram account on January 11.

In the video, she announces that she is in contact with Belgian doctors in order to carry out an assisted suicide towards the end of the year 2023.

On his YouTube channel, The Journal of Olympusthe influencer, whose real first name is Lily, regularly shares her difficulties, in particular on her state of health, with her approximately 255,000 subscribers.

The 23-year-old has dissociative identity disorder (DID), a condition where two or more identities take over a person. The disorder involves the person forgetting everyday events, important personal information, or even traumatic or stressful events, according to the Merck Manual of Diagnosis and Therapeutics.

DID can be treated with a combination of therapy and medication. The treatment is often painful because it involves the patient having to come back to traumas from his past.

This disorder is usually caused by significant childhood trauma.

Olympe has already told on her networks that she has already been the victim of school harassment, pedophilia, and several rapes in the past. After her family abandoned her, she went through 20 adoptive families and four youth homes in seven years.

“Like any human, I have my limits. And my limits have been pushed to their extreme for years, and I can’t go through any more tests.

After her announcement, Olympe denounced the cyberbullying she suffered regarding her decision, which caused a lot of reaction.

“It’s my life and it was a tough decision I had to make. I’m tired […] Life, I feel it as I suffer it, “said the young woman, who claims to have made this decision” with a clear head.

Despite everything, she does not exclude the possibility of changing her mind. “I still want to live a lot of things,” she said.

It is still possible that the approach of the influencer stumbles. To have access to medical assistance in dying in Belgium, a person who requests it must meet several criteria. In particular, it must be impossible to cure it despite the treatments that exist.

According to doctor Yves de Locht, with whom Olympe would have been in contact, proving that it is impossible for the young woman to heal will be “a long and difficult path”, he said in an interview with The Parisianlast Monday.
