a young motorist loses his life trying to escape a police check

A police control operation ended badly this Sunday in the early evening. A driver in his thirties wanted to escape the police who were checking the vehicles, and fled. In doing so, he crossed the town of Olne, at very high speed before ending up in the village of Saint-Hadelin. There, he got stuck in a stone retaining wall. The victim lost his life.

According to Cédric Hallin, the mayor of Olne, the young man was chased by the Beyne-Fléron-Soumage police zone, while he was in Soumagne. “According to the first information I have, he refused to obey the injunctions and fled while driving in a very dangerous way. He crossed Olne at a fairly high speed and ended up in the village of Saint-Hadelin, where he missed a bend and crashed head-on into a stone retaining wall”. Information that suggests to the mayor that the driver of the car was not from the town because “everyone here knows this bend”.

The police who were carrying out the checks were present in large numbers on the spot at the time of the accident. The driver was the only one involved. The victim was not in possession of any identity document that would have made it possible to identify him quickly. Neither the vehicle nor its registration was registered.

The young man may have been traveling with false plates or a stolen vehicle, which would explain his desire to evade a police check.

A neighbor of the bend testifies: “We heard like an explosion. We went out right away and it was smoking. Moments later, the police arrived. L’Olnoise confirms that this bend is considered dangerous: “We have lived here for twenty years and this is the fifth accident that has occurred here”.
