He was on the run, the Department for Judicial Institutions (DJI) of the Dutch Ministry of Justice and Security said on Wednesday evening. The Antwerp public prosecutor’s office confirms in the evening that the victim was 21 years old. According to the DJI, the young man had taken two members of staff hostage outside the walls of the institution and then fled to Belgium. “During his arrest by the police in Belgium, shots were fired and the youngster died,” it says, despite resuscitation efforts.
The shootings are blamed both on the police and on the young man, according to the Antwerp prosecutor’s office, but the precise circumstances have yet to be clarified. Forensic scientists and the laboratory came to the scene and the vehicles were seized as part of the investigation.
An autopsy of the victim’s body will be undertaken. Committee P will also hear the police officers involved.
The staff held hostage were taken to safety and were not injured.
