The new top of the range from the Japanese brand will arrive in a few days, exactly one year following the release of the Xperia 5 IV.

The manufacturer will offer an online conference for the first day of the IFA in Berlin to officially unveil in detail its new smartphone Xperia 5 V. This will be the brand’s second top-of-the-range model to be released this year, following the remarkable Xperia 1 V.

A dedicated event

Several sources, including a Japanese site and the US Federal Communications Commission, reported very recently that Sony intended to unveil its Xperia 5 V exactly one year following the release of the Xperia 5 IV, on September 1st. The company confirmed the rumors by posting a short teaser video highlighting the photographic capabilities of its next smartphone. The video ends with the announcement of a launch event to be held online on Friday, September 1 at 9 a.m. local time.

Sony had launched its excellent Xperia 1 V last May and therefore comes with a 5 V model, as usual more compact. A smartphone sold cheaper too. Remember that the Xperia 5 IV model was sold for €300 less than the 1 IV, to reach €1,000.

Concessions ?

The price positioning of the Xperia 5 is regularly subject to debate, with prices easily reaching €1,000, which is generally €300 cheaper than the Xperia 1. This year once more, Sony plans to launch a powerful smartphone, but it might be possible to see a (small) drop in price. Indeed, a leaked video, published in July, showed us an Xperia 5 V with only two photo sensors instead of the usual three. There is no doubt that the manufacturer will have sacrificed the telephoto lens to keep only the main sensor and the ultra-wide-angle. A choice made to lower the price of the device?

We will find out soon enough. As we will actually find out what will hide under the shell of the smartphone. This should contain a SoC Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, the latest generation of processors from Qualcomm that equips most high-end phones released since the end of last year. If Sony really wants to lower the price of its Xperia 5 V, it would not be excluded either that we will ultimately find a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chip.
