On August 20, 2024, a mixed police station (national police and municipal police) was established in the district of Nimpisheven.

Excavators are at work, a viaduct is demolished, an underground car park is destroyed… Around the Galerie Wagner, a center of drug trafficking in Nîmes, a massive urban renewal project (totaling 250 million euros) begins in mid-summer in Piseven, France’s poorest city one of the regions. Even though the city’s transformation will continue for at least five years, the changes in topography are already evident.

“It’s strange that there are fewer buildings. They destroyed the whole first part of the gallery. That’s better”On the afternoon of August 19, Houria came to the pharmacy with her two children. “We can’t wait, we want everything to change here”The thirty-year-old said he was born in the neighborhood and could not imagine moving, even though daily life had become too unbearable.

One year ago, on August 21, 2023, Fayed, a 10-year-old local child, was killed by a stray bullet during a liquidation related to drug trafficking. The incident has left people traumatized. Several “Local Network” operations have destabilized traffickers’ organizations: 400 people have been arrested this year and 136 fixed criminal fines have been issued since the summer of 2023, mainly in Piseven (53 a year ago) .

“Trading points are less flashy; said Jérôme Bonet, Premier of the Gard Department. But we will not deny the reality that drug trafficking continues. » If the situation in Piseven is slightly less tense, at the other end of the city, in the Chemin Bas district of Avignon, the last few months have seen a series of drug-related reckonings.

Jérôme Bonet took office the day Fayyad died and made no secret of his determination. He holds twice-monthly meetings with Cécile Gensac, the prosecutor of Nimes, to discuss the problems of these communities. The strategy is clear: Target shady nightclubs and sandwich shops with increased inspections and increased enforcement in neighborhoods that are the city’s policy priorities.
