A woman underwent major surgery following discovering a huge tumor on her ovary, thinking it was simply a protruding belly.
On the 3rd (local time), the British Daily Mail introduced the case of Italian woman A (52), which was recently published in the international journal ‘American Case Report Journal’.
Over the past 10 years, Mr. A has suffered from stomach acid and bile reflux, abdominal distension, gait disturbance, and shortness of breath, and has consistently felt the feeling of fullness even following eating a little. In particular, her stomach was abnormally bloated and she weighed 123 kg. At her hospital visit, a gynecological ultrasound revealed a cyst on her right ovary. The size of the ovarian cyst was 44 cm in length and 35 cm in width, and it had penetrated into the abdominal cavity and was also compressing the intestine and retroperitoneum.
The woman underwent a six-and-a-half-hour operation to remove the cyst. After removing regarding 37 liters of fluid from the inside of the cyst, the medical team removed the tissue attached to the organ. Later, she performed surgery to reduce the size of the enlarged abdominal cavity and reconstruct the abdominal wall, and during this process, the patient even received a blood transfusion due to excessive bleeding.
After surgery, the woman was hospitalized in an intensive care unit for two months. During her hospitalization, she suffered cardiac arrest and acute renal failure. Fortunately, she survived her crisis and was discharged. The woman’s body mass index (BMI) decreased from 50.5 before her surgery to 28.3, and she is now in full health.
The medical staff who reported the case cited the unfavorable economic situation and low level of education as the reason why A’s treatment was delayed.
“The delay in diagnosis was probably due to her low socioeconomic and educational status,” said Dr. Michel Piretti of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Medical University of Cagliari in Italy. said. On the other hand, ovarian cyst is a cyst of sap in the ovary that produces female hormones, and it often disappears naturally without treatment. However, in rare cases, when the cyst grows larger than 10 cm, it causes abdominal distension and pain, and when the cyst ruptures, severe pain in the back or lower abdomen, nausea, vomiting, fever, and dizziness may occur.
