The body of a woman believed to be a North Korean resident was found near Gunnam Dam on the Imjin River in the northernmost part of Yeoncheon, Gyeonggi-do, and the police and military authorities began an investigation.

According to the Yeoncheon Police Station in Gyeonggi Province on the 24th, at 8:25 am on the 23rd at 8:25 am, a camper passing by in the bushes along the downstream of the Imjin River Gunnam Dam in Yeoncheon-gun found a woman’s body and reported it to the police.

At the time of discovery, the body was said to have undergone decomposition to such an extent that it was impossible to estimate its age.

However, the police estimate that it is highly probable that he was a North Korean resident, as he wore a badge with portraits of North Korean President Kim Il-sung and North Korean leader Kim Jong-il on his shirt.

The police have requested an autopsy to the National Institute of Scientific Investigation to determine the exact cause of death.

If the result of DNA comparison with Koreans reveals that it is highly likely that they are North Koreans, the relevant authorities will pursue a plan to deliver the body to North Korea through the Ministry of Unification.

Meanwhile, the police are investigating the possibility that the bodies of unidentified children and infants have been found one following another in Gyeonggi and Incheon this month, leaving the possibility that they may have been washed away from North Korea.

Earlier, on the 16th, the body of an infant was found near the Unification Bridge in the Imjingang River in Paju, and on the 5th of this month, the body of a child estimated to be around 8 years old was found at the mouth of the Han River in Jeonhae-ri, Gimpo-si, Gyeonggi-do.

In addition, on the 2nd of this month, the body of a child estimated to be between 3 and 7 years old was found in the tidal flat in front of Gyodong Island, Ganghwa-gun, Incheon.
