A woman named Mary Mason lost an eye following it became infected while wearing contact lenses while showering.
Mary, 54, from Leicestershire, England, developed an infection in her left eye following a microscopic amoeba in tap water managed to move between her contact lens and cornea.
Then, she started noticing something was wrong with her eye in 2015, when she constantly felt that something was stuck in her eye. Soon following, her eyesight began to deteriorate, according to nypost.
After a visit to the ophthalmologist, she was immediately taken to the hospital, and discovered that the bacteria known as “acanthamoeba keratitis” lived inside her eyes.
Prior to the accident, Mary had been wearing contact lenses for 30 days even while showering, since infection can commonly be found in tap water, the source of the infection is believed to be.
Over time, the infection developed and began to feed on the cornea, causing her eyesight to deteriorate rapidly.
After 5 years, trying a variety of medications, in addition to having a number of unsuccessful operations, including 3 corneal transplants.
In the end, doctors had to remove her eye.
“I had to stop working, because at that time I was working in a kitchen in a school, and I had to put in eye drops every half hour,” the woman said.
“It was also necessary for me to go to the hospital two to three times a week, sometimes more than that,” she added.
She continued, “There were a lot of hospital visits, a lot of eye drops, operations and procedures and a lot of pain.”
Now, Marie, hopes to raise awareness and put better warnings on contact lens packages regarding the dangers of contamination.
She said, “Put on contact lenses, that’s totally fine, but you just have to be careful, it’s the watery thing more than anything else, I just like the manufacturers to put more warnings on the packaging regarding water and contact lenses, I just don’t want anyone to go through the experience.” Really last.”
She also stated: “Despite the obstacles, my life is now fine, I have not returned to work where I left, but now I work with my husband Jonathan, 50, as an administrative assistant.”
With frequent infections, scientists are now warning people regarding the dangers of wearing long-term contact lenses.
