**Interview with Dr. Kęstutis Kučinskas: A Leader in Ophthalmology**
**Editor:** Welcome, Dr. Kučinskas, and thank you for joining us today. It’s a pleasure to speak with someone who has dedicated decades to advancing ophthalmology in Lithuania. Can you tell us a bit about your early experiences that led you to pursue a career in medicine?
**Dr. Kučinskas:** Thank you for having me. My journey into medicine began in my childhood. I faced some painful experiences that made me consider how I could contribute to helping others. This motivation drove me to enroll in the Institute of Medicine, and I graduated in 1983. Throughout my studies, I knew I wanted to specialize in a field where I could make a tangible difference in people’s lives.
**Editor:** You’ve had a long and distinguished career at the Republican Panevėžys Hospital, especially in your role as head of the Department of Eye Diseases. What changes did you implement that you believe were pivotal during your 30 years of leadership?
**Dr. Kučinskas:** One of the most significant changes we made was enhancing our focus on surgical interventions, particularly in cataract surgery. When I took over in 1991, our approach needed to be modernized to improve patient outcomes. We adopted new techniques and technologies that have not only improved the quality of care we provide but also transformed the way we approach eye diseases.
**Editor:** It sounds like you’ve overseen some important advancements. Can you share any specific achievements of the department that you’re particularly proud of?
**Dr. Kučinskas:** Absolutely. One of our proudest achievements has been our progress in cataract surgeries, which have become safe, efficient, and effective. Additionally, we’ve established comprehensive protocols for diagnosing and managing various eye conditions. Seeing our patients regain their sight and improve their quality of life is incredibly rewarding, and it drives our team to continue pushing the boundaries of what we can achieve.
**Editor:** It’s inspiring to hear. As you reflect on your extensive career, what advice would you give to young medical professionals entering the field today?
**Dr. Kučinskas:** I would tell them to remain curious and open to learning. The field of medicine, and especially ophthalmology, is constantly evolving with new research and technologies. Embrace innovation, and don’t hesitate to seek mentorship and collaboration. Most importantly, remember that patients are at the heart of what we do; their well-being should always guide our decisions.
**Editor:** Thank you, Dr. Kučinskas, for sharing your insights and experiences with us. Your dedication to improving eye health is truly commendable, and we look forward to seeing the continued impact of your work in the medical community.
