Mexico had four boxing champions this weekend. On Saturday, in the World Boxing Association (WBA) fights, Isaac “Pitbull” Cruz, Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramírez and Julio César “Rey” Martínez triumphed; while a day before, in a World Boxing Organization (WBO) fight, Óscar Valdez was crowned.
“Pitbull” Cruz won the super lightweight title by defeating the American Rolando Romero by technical knockout at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, where “Canelo” Álvarez will fight Jaime Munguía in May.
With this, the 25-year-old boxer has 26 wins, 18 by fast track, two lost fights and one draw, while “Rolly” has accumulated 15 wins, 13 by knockout, and two losses.
“Whoever comes next, I’m dangerous. There is a belt that supports me. I’m prepared for a Gervonta (Davis), a (Devin) Haney or whoever wants to try the ‘Pitbull’s’ blows,” Cruz commented.
The Mexican added: “I worked not only to win, I came to slaughter him and make him swallow all the garbage he had spoken. “I spoke in the ring.”
That same night, at the T-Mobile Arena, Mexican Julio César “Rey” Martínez remained the flyweight champion by defeating Venezuelan Angelino “Huracán” Córdova by majority decision.
The cards in favor of “Rey” counted 114-112, 114-112, the other gave a tie 113-113. Martínez has 21 fights won, 15 by knockout, and three losses; he has defended the flyweight title seven times. Córdova accumulates 18 victories, 12 by fast track, one defeat and one draw.
Gilberto Ramírez faced Frenchman Arsen Goulamirian at the YouTube Theater in Inglewood and took the WBA cruiserweight world championship from him.
After 12 rounds, “Zurdo” Ramírez scored 118-111 in his favor and gave Mexico the first cruise champion in history.
Ramírez had his second consecutive victory, following he defeated Joe Smith Jr. in October.
Óscar Valdez defeated Australian Liam Wilson by knockout on Friday at the Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale (Arizona) and took the WBO interim title in the super featherweight category.
The 12-round fight ended in the seventh with a left to the face of the Australian. The Mexican has 32 victories, 24 by knockouts, and 2 losses.
“We did it and I didn’t get there alone. I thank God, my team, Eddy Reynoso, Canelo Team, Don Carlos Barragán, my father, Espinoza Boxing, Nassim Molina, Top Rank Boxeo and the entire team that is with me,” he wrote in X.
