Changeable is probably the best way to describe the weather this week. Mild foehn weather is followed by cold, wet weather – “typical autumn weather,” says Claudia Riedl from Geosphere Austria. The back and forth is due to a low over the British Isles and a southwesterly current, which alternately influence Upper Austria. Monday starts with foehn winds, wind speeds of up to 60 km/h are possible in the mountains. In the morning some fog forms in the foothills of the Alps, but it dissipates again. During the day, dense clouds move over the country, which is why the sun may have a difficult time.
On Tuesday night, a cold front will bring rain showers, fresh westerly winds and temperatures in the low double digits. On Wednesday the pendulum will swing in the other direction again, an intermediate high will bring friendly, sunny weather with temperatures around 15 degrees. On Thursday the foehn will take over again, and strong southerly winds can be expected in the mountains.
Cold front on Friday
The next cold front will follow on Friday and it will be cloudy and wet. If it clears up on Saturday night, temperatures could be slightly below zero degrees. From today’s perspective, Saturday will again be on the foehn and therefore milder side, while Sunday is likely to usher in a slightly cooler and wetter phase. Snowfall can also be expected in the mountains. Cooler, wet weather dominates the following week, but this is not a breakthrough for the cooler version of autumn. After November 12th, the changeable, partly mild autumn weather could take over again this and last week, says Riedl in an OÖN interview.
Aerobatic pilots on the move
On this occasion, the Geosphere weather expert was also able to clarify a reader question. The “cloud rings” that were seen in St. Martin im Mühlkreis on Saturday probably came from aerobatic pilots, because the contrails are holding up particularly well due to the currently high humidity.
