At least one woman died on Tuesday and two men were injured in a Xavier University shooting in the state of Luisana (USA), local police reported.
According to the police in New Orleans (Louisiana), where the university campus is located, the event took place in a parking lot, next to a facility where a graduation ceremony for high school students had been held.
The Police have not revealed so far the identity or age of the victims and continue with the investigation.
“Detectives are gathering information to identify the person(s) responsible for this crime and the motive. Multiple subjects were detained at the scene for questioning. No arrests have been made as of this writing,” the city’s Police Department said in a statement.
On May 24, 19 children and two teachers were killed in a shooting at a school in Uvalde (Texas) in which the attacker also died.
The president of the United States, Joe Biden, promised this Tuesday that he will meet with members of Congress to discuss the issue of arms control, following what happened in Uvalde, the deadliest school shooting in the United States since Sandy Hook, which killed 27 people, including the shooter, in December 2012.
The debate on firearms control was reactivated last week in the wake of the Uvalde shooting, in which an 18-year-old boy, identified as Salvador Ramos, entered a primary school armed with an automatic rifle that he had purchased legally and he fired indiscriminately at the students.
Several Democratic Party politicians and civil society activists have tried to advocate for gun control to prevent more school shootings in the country, while Republicans, historically opposed to measures that limit the purchase of firearms, have preferred to focus the debate on the mental health problems of the attacker.
Ramos had no history of mental health problems prior to the shooting, according to authorities.
The de Uvalde is the deadliest school shooting in the United States since the one in Sandy Hook, in which 27 people died, including the attacker, in December 2012.
