Three people were killed when a car jumped off a bridge and plunged into the Nile during a wedding parade in Cairo, the Egyptian capital, Egyptian media reported on Sunday night.

The government newspaper Akhbar Al-Youm reported that a car carrying the bride’s sister, brother-in-law and four other people collided with a metal guardrail on a highway near the Maadi area in southern Cairo and fell.

According to the newspaper, the rescue team that arrived at the scene recovered the bodies of the bride’s sister and two passengers. Two other people, including the husband of the bride’s sister who was driving the car, were rescued and sent to the hospital.

The newspaper said rescuers were continuing to search for another missing person in the incident.

Local media quoted witnesses as saying the driver was conspicuously driving his car on the bridge before he apparently lost control of the vehicle.

Journalist Abdel Rahman Abadi wrote on his page: Facebook Just before sunset on Sunday, he was racing once morest time to get to an appointment on the Al Munib Ring Road when a convoy of wedding cars stopped in front of him, halfway across the Nile between the Al Munib and Maadi exits.

He said: “I tried to overtake, but one of the convoys blocked the road in front of me and the young man driving said no one would overtake him (…) and then the car started moving in a celebratory acrobatic way. Just passed After a while, the car broke through the iron barrier and rushed deep into the Nile River, right in the middle of the bridge.

He added: “Due to the horrific situation, all the cars stopped and everyone started looking at the collapsed iron fence. There was no trace of the sunken car. For more than 5 minutes, it was pitch dark and no one understood the situation. .

He continued, “The bride got out of her car to check on the situation and within minutes she realized her brothers were in the sinking car and no one might do anything for her.”

Wedding processions are common in Egypt, with beautifully decorated cars driving through the streets, accompanied by blaring music and often accompanied by reckless driving on the roads.
