The decline in citizens’ demand for vaccinations, due to fear of the side effects they cause, has raised a wave of concern and controversy at the same time, especially since parents have stopped the vaccination process for the benefit of children, which some parties believe may have negative health consequences for the health of children.

In this context, a responsible source confirmed to Alam that the management of the pandemic and the decisions that accompanied it regarding the effectiveness and reliability of vaccines, led people to “lack confidence” in the effectiveness of vaccination. The spokesman pointed out that the focus that was on fighting the Covid-19 pandemic led to neglecting the fight against other diseases, which caused deaths, especially among children who contracted measles. The official called for caution and warned mothers about the need to have their children fully vaccinated.

This comes at a time when community activities in the Saksaoua region of Chichaoua province called on the authorities to intervene urgently in order to accelerate vaccination campaigns and distribute medicines to those infected with measles “Bouhamroun”.

The spread of measles in the region has mobilized civil society organizations, human rights activists, and some members of elected councils, who warned of what they called the “danger of the situation” in the region, and demanded that the necessary field measures be taken, epidemiological monitoring activities and vaccination campaigns be strengthened, and that they be brought closer to citizens in remote villages, after 8 deaths were recorded among children in the region.

“Epidemics like measles start when unvaccinated people become infected and transmit it to under- or under-vaccinated people in populations where measles vaccination coverage rates are below 95 percent,” explained Tayeb Hamdi, a health policy expert.
