According to leaks from a closed ministerial meeting attended by Macron on Tuesday, published by Le Parisien newspaper, Macron said that Netanyahu should not forget that his country was established by a United Nations decision.

The French newspaper indicated that Macron attacked Netanyahu, during the cabinet meeting, against the backdrop of severe tension between the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) and Israel.

One of the participants said: “Netanyahu must not forget that his country was established by a decision of the United Nations,” referring to the United Nations General Assembly’s vote in November 1947 on the plan to divide Palestine into a Jewish state and an Arab state.

On the other hand, the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office announced that Netanyahu made a phone call with Macron, during which he stressed that it was not the United Nations resolution that established the State of Israel, but rather the victory that was achieved in the War of Independence with the blood of heroic fighters, many of whom were Holocaust survivors. He added, “It is also worth noting that in the past decades, the United Nations has issued hundreds of anti-Semitic resolutions against the State of Israel, the purpose of which is to deny the right to exist the only Jewish state, and its ability to defend itself,” according to what was stated in the Israeli statement.
