In harsh terms, the Regional Federation of Artisanal Fishermen (Ferepa) referred to the request for a concession of marine space made by three communities in Coronel, and that the administration of the coastline might grant them. “A war in the street” is coming, warned the president of the federation.
“A war in the street” is coming. This is how the president of the Regional Federation of Artisanal Fishermen (Ferepa) reacted, following Radio Bío Bío announced the request for maritime space made by the Association of Indigenous Communities of Coronel.
The requirement, by which the Lafkenche Law was invoked, was presented by the legal firm headed by former conventionalist Amaya Álvez, who participated in the area of the law of indigenous peoples during the constituent process
In conversation with La Radio, Hugo Arancibia, president of Ferepa, said that “A conflict is going to be seen, a conflict that is going to explode soon in the street. First they are going to be fishermen because of this string of actions by the indigenous world (…) Ferepa is supporting this movement, because we are not available to hand over these spaces that have been occupied, so that today we are charged a toll.”
Regarding this type of request, he said that first it was the one from Lafkenche communities that demanded from Coliumo to Tirúa, “Without having a goal set in this regard”added Arancibia, who added that the same thing is happening now in Coronel, where a “quite strong controversy is coming, and a war that comes in the street”.
In the event that the request for a concession of marine space is granted to the community, this will not be exclusive to it, but must coexist with those who are already established In this area, however, will be in charge of the use and administrationfor which they must make a management plan.
Regarding this, the president of Ferepa added that “The objects are not met, because the object is that together a management plan be made that determines which are the activities that each one of them will resort to. A short time ago there was an attack by fishermen from Tirúa once morest artisanal boats that were fishing in that area, that is, these are obvious mechanisms that allow us to be cautious.”
The three communities that make up the Association of Indigenous Communities of Coronel are Fotun Pu Lafken, Huenullanca and Marihuen. The latter acknowledged that is not from the area and that they were invited to participate of the initiative.
