“A violation of international law”.. Jordan condemns the storming of Al-Aqsa by two Israeli ministers

Amman – Jordan condemned, on Tuesday, the storming of Al-Aqsa Mosque in East Jerusalem by two Israeli ministers and members of the Knesset (parliament), considering it a “flagrant violation of international law.”

This came in a statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in which it condemned “the storming of Al-Aqsa Mosque by two extremist ministers from the Israeli government and members of the Knesset today under the protection of the Israeli occupation police, coinciding with the storming of the mosque by Israeli extremists and their provocative practices, and the imposition of restrictions on the entry of worshipers into the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque.”

The official Palestinian news agency, WAFA, had previously said on Tuesday that “Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and the so-called Minister of Negev and Galilee Affairs, Yitzhak Wasserlauf, stormed Al-Aqsa under the protection of the occupation police.”

Commenting on the matter, the Jordanian Foreign Ministry considered it “a flagrant violation of international law and the historical and legal status quo in Jerusalem and its holy sites, reflecting the insistence of the Israeli government and its extremist members to disregard international laws and Israel’s obligations as the occupying power.”

She stressed that “the continuation of Israeli unilateral measures and ongoing violations of the historical and legal status quo in Jerusalem and its holy sites requires a clear and firm international position condemning these violations and breaches, and providing the necessary protection for the Palestinian people in light of the Israeli government’s continued aggression against the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.”

The Jordanian Foreign Ministry reiterated that “the Al-Aqsa Mosque, with its entire area of 144 dunams, is a place of worship exclusively for Muslims, and that the Jerusalem Endowments and Al-Aqsa Mosque Affairs Administration, affiliated with the Jordanian Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs and Holy Places, is the legal entity with exclusive jurisdiction to manage all the affairs of the Noble Sanctuary and regulate entry to it.”

It also stressed “the right of the State of Palestine to sovereignty over the occupied city of Jerusalem, and that Israel, the occupying power, has no right or sovereignty over the occupied city of Jerusalem and its Islamic and Christian sanctities.”

On Tuesday morning, the Islamic Endowments Department in Jerusalem (affiliated with Jordan and responsible for managing Al-Aqsa affairs) said in a written statement that reached Anadolu Agency, “2,250 settlers stormed Al-Aqsa Mosque.”

She expected hundreds more settlers to storm the mosque in the coming hours.

Israeli right-wing groups called for widespread incursions into Al-Aqsa Mosque, on the occasion of the anniversary of the so-called “destruction of the Temple.”

The number of intruders increases significantly during Jewish religious holidays.

On Monday, dozens of settlers organized an Israeli flag march around the walls of the Old City of Jerusalem for the occasion.

Since 2003, the Israeli police have unilaterally allowed settlers to storm Al-Aqsa Mosque despite repeated protests from the Islamic Waqf Department.

Today’s storming of Al-Aqsa Mosque coincides with the continuation of the war waged by Israel with American support since October 7 on the Gaza Strip, which has left more than 132,000 Palestinians dead and wounded, most of them children and women, and more than 10,000 missing, amidst massive destruction and deadly famine.
