Israeli experts said an unusually bright meteor was seen in the country’s skies on Saturday followingnoon, with some observers even saying they heard a loud blast.
The Israel Astronomical Association (IAA) says it received reports that the meteor was seen for a few seconds in central and northern Israel, around 5:16 p.m., following a northeasterly trajectory.
Several residents of central Israel say they heard a loud blast soon following.
“Such an explosion is explained when we are dealing with a relatively large stone: everything also depends on its composition,” explained the IAA.
An image published by the IAA shows a fiery trail in the sky.
Such a phenomenon is relatively rare in Israeli skies.
It is unknown at this stage whether pieces of the meteor survived its descent through the atmosphere. Such fragments that touch the ground are then called meteorites.
