A version of Valve’s Portal works kinda on the Nintendo 64

valves GateReleased in 2007(!), it’s one of the last games one would expect the humble little N64 to be able to handle, yet here we are in 2022, and we’re seeing it handle it well.

Programmer James Lambert worked on a Gate It’s been demake for the Nintendo system for quite some time now, but in its latest developer video it reveals that it’s not only made “tremendous progress behind the scenes of the game engine”, but has the most important thing working: the portal gun.

The video below shows a rough demonstration of Lambert’s progress, but even at this point it looks amazing. The gates are attached to the walls – with smart sensors in place to work around corners – and when you get close to them, you can look directly at them and everything reflected inside moves exactly as it is.

To give you an idea of how much this pushes the hardware – remember, this isn’t anything like the N64, it was actually developed for the N64 and this video was captured on the N64 – Lambert says in the video that it should usually have in-game sound effects now, but he wanted “Verifying that the Nintendo 64 can even make portals” before doing so here.

In terms of gate views, the N64 can really handle — for example, the number of times the room you’re in when searching through a gate will iterate — in this video you can see it go up to a maximum of four, although Lambert He says the final will likely need to do fewer to keep things running smoothly.

If all this sounds vaguely familiar, it’s because of Gate It was also recreated – at least in part – by longtime Nintendo DS fansWhich was also an amazing achievement.
