a V8 of more than 500 hp for the Dark Horse

After its online presentation, the seventh generation of the Ford Mustang made its first public appearance at the Detroit show last September. To satisfy its customers before Christmas, the American brand has just given more information on its new Pony Car, including some technical characteristics.

The fans of the Mustang swear by the V8. But while some expected an electrified model, Ford surprises everyone by offering only gasoline combustion engines on its new sports car.

At entry level, the 7th Mustang of the name still receives the 2.3 EcoBoost 4‑cylinder block. This has 317 hp and 450 Nm of torque, the same power as the current version. For the occasion, the engine has been revised and the exhaust line releases more beautiful vocals.

The Ford Mustang GT has the naturally aspirated 5.0 liter Coyote V8. Here, this block well known to Pony Car enthusiasts develops 480 hp and 560 Nm of torque. That’s 30 hp more than the current Mustang GT!

Ford Mustang (2023): no electric but a V8 for the new generation

With the EcoBoost block and the V8 of the GT, the new Ford Mustang transmits its power only to the rear wheels via an automatic transmission or a manual transmission.

The top of the range will be animated by the Dark Horse variant. With its more assertive style and its sporty body kit, this demonic version of the Ford Mustang houses the same atmospheric Coyote 5.0 V8 as the GT version. But this one received a recalibration by the Ford Performance teams including a new camshaft, new pistons and forged connecting rods. Elements not really new since they have already been introduced on the last GT500.

Result, the Dark Horse displays 507 hp and 566 Nm of torque. The engine speed can reach up to 7,500 rpm. In this version, Ford only offers the 10-speed automatic transmission. No manual gearbox was reported.

“Every time someone gets behind the wheel of a Mustang, we know they want to feel that strong connection to their vehicle — and we’re equally invested in creating that connection.”said Suzanne Robinson, in charge of the Coyote engine program. “With the increased responsiveness you get from the new twin-barrel throttles, we get every ounce of performance we can from our engine so Mustang enthusiasts can experience that.”

Available in coupe and convertible versions, the 7th generation Ford Mustang will be available for sale from the summer of 2023. On the other hand, given European standards, the Dark Horse version should not arrive on the Old Continent…
