A Unique Walking Tree – Life & Style

Most of our planet’s rarest organisms are found in the tropical forests of South America, where nature and culture are dedicated to preventing deforestation and protecting the complex ecosystems that support all life. A notable example of the endemic and unique flora of these forests is the “Walking Palm” (Socratea exorrhiza), a type of palm tree, with roots extending several feet above the ground.

Some people claim that a certain type of this tree can run. Allegedly “walking” palm trees move through the forest, as the growth and spread of new roots slowly moves it from place to place.

The roots of this tree extend out of the soil, giving the tree the appearance of standing or walking on legs. The scientific name of the tree in question is Socratic Exoriza, nicknamed the “walking palm”.

A study like Avalos’ shows that trees stay put. Scientists continue to study the walking palm and its unique root system.

Some believe that the roots allow the tree to be more stable in swampy areas. Others suggest that frozen roots allow the palm to grow taller to reach the light without increasing the diameter of the stem.
