A study has shown that the yew tree is the best type of plant to combat air pollution.
According to research, the small and pointed leaves of this tree have a strong ability to prevent toxic particles in the air.
Many plantations use trees that shed their leaves in autumn, even though this is the season when air pollution in towns and cities is at its worst.
So scientists focused on evergreen trees that can help clean the air throughout the year, especially in winter.
Scientists from the Global Center for Clean Air Research based in the British county of Surrey planted 10 evergreen trees on one side of a London highway (through which regarding 80,000 vehicles pass daily).
In the research, the scientists tried to find out which tree absorbs the most pollutants and which tree washes the particles to the ground better in the rain.
Scientists believed that particles would be more able to stick to leaves with rough surfaces and fine fibers. But nothing like that came out.
In this regard, pointed leaves were found to be most effective. Such leaves were found in Japanese cedar and Lawson’s cypress.
Other trees planted in the study include viburnum, white cedar, Sitka spruce, dwarf pine, Chinese juniper and Japanese holly.
